Changing Seasons - When Should I Change The Clothes In My Baby's Closet? By Michal Moreno

During the past few years weather has become highly unexpected. Whether it is due to global warming, or just a phase the globe is going through, we as parents need to make adjustments in many aspects – and one of them is when and how we change our baby's wardrobe.

When thinking of the best way to organize our baby's closet or chest, it seems that one big closet with space for both winter and summer clothes is the best solution, but since most of us do not have unlimited closet space, we need to make smart seasonal space considerations.

As a mother of three young children – two of them are babies, I have a method that works well, which I'd like to share it with you, and it goes as follows:

1. Changing the wardrobe between seasons should be done during spring and fall. The exact months change according to where you live, but generally speaking – changing your winter baby's wardrobe to summer clothes should happen between the months of April and May, and changing to a winter wardrobe should be done between September and October.

2. Organize items by activity and color: In order to make the choosing of clothes easier, make sure to organize the items by the type of activity and color. This way, you should end up with a stack of day-to-day (playground) shirts, another stack of day-to-day bottoms, and two stacks of nicer clothes for the weekend/holiday. If you wish to make it even easier – make two more stacks of day-to-day and holiday complete outfits with matching tops and bottoms.

3. Always keep a few “transfer” items in the closet. Transfer items are items that are last season's items, and are easily worn. An example to a classic transfer item is a long sleeve hood or poncho with a zipper – you can always carry that along, and if it suddenly gets cold outside you can easily wear it.

4. Past season's clothes you can keep in a less accessible (higher) closet for your next baby, and don't forget to give them a good washing beforehand and fold them nicely. From my experience, baby clothes prices are so low, that you would want to keep only the best items, while keeping the entire wardrobe is not worthwhile – I have usually used only a small part of the items. The rest – just give away for charity or a relative, you'll have the chance of doing something nice and keeping your closet tidy.
