Please and Thank You

Written by Carmen Joseph

My eldest daughter enjoys singing the following at meal time, “Please and thank you are so nice, are so nice, are so nice, please and thank you are so nice and we like to say them”,  “We fold our hands and softly say, thank you for our snack today”.  I was pleasantly surprised that she was taught this in one of her schools at snack time.

Getting our children to say please and thank you is quite challenging at its best. They often have to be reminded.  “Mommy, I want milk!” “Sweetie, how do we ask for something politely?” “Please”. “Please what?” “Please can I have some milk?”  I hand her the milk, “What do you say?” “Thank you!” Please and Thank you.  Why do we put so much emphasis on those three words?  Why must our children say, “Please” and “Thank you”?

Please and Thank you are not just polite words, they are words which  convey a message of respect and appreciation. It lets the other person know that you are not taking them for granted and shows that you are grateful. It is important to teach our children these words so that they can grow up being respectful and respectable individuals.

As I grow older, I can look back at my upbringing and really appreciate what my parents did for me.  Being raised in a West Indian household manners and discipline were a big part of my upbringing.  “Yes please” and “No thank you” were proper responses to someone asking you if you would like to have something. It was unacceptable not to say those words.

I often hear talk, (especially from people of my parents generation ) about how kids nowadays do not have any manners.  Is there truth to this? Perhaps.  Can we change this pattern, yes.  Young children who are just learning how to communicate, often have to be reminded until it becomes one of those good habits that are ingrained.  Is it frustrating when your child demands something from you, instead of asking politely? Yes, however we have to continue to remind ourselves that they are still learning and eventually they will get it!

As we get ready to celebrate our Canadian Thanksgiving,  just a reminder to say  “Please and Thank You” as you ask for someone to pass the peas and carrots.

Kids Costumes...My Hallowe'en Hell

Written By Tera Hryciuk

I'm enjoying a lazy afternoon on a lawnchair, Maeve Binchy novel in hand, reveling in the fact that my daughters are busy playing and not bothering me, when my five-year-old saunters over.

"Mommy, do ya know what I wanna be for Hallowe'en?"  She asks for the umpteenth time."

Well, lemme see..." I reply, knowing full well that she wants to be Rosella from the Island Princess Barbie movie.  I know this because she reminds me of her costume choice on an almost weekly basis, despite the fact that Hallowe'en is months away and she should be enjoying what's left of summer.  So detailed is her account of the costume that I could pick it out had I never seen the movie.  So great was my fear of not being able to find her costume or it being completely sold out, that it was purchased in mid-June, and is now neatly tucked in some obscure corner of my walk-in-closet.  My three-year-old, on the other hand, appears to be unwilling to commit to her Hallowe'en costume.

"Maybe I'll be a witch...or a cat...or a skunk...Um, no...a princess..."

Weeks later, it is early September and I am none the wiser as to the youngest child's "final answer".   How does one get their child to commit to what they want to wear, without the fear of them changing their minds at the very last minute?  A friend of mine confided that one year she actually bought and exchanged hallowe'en costumes for her son four times.  As a parent who is unwilling to do this, how can I avoid the tears and tantrums? I finally decided to sit my little one down and explain that the costume-makers need a little time to make all the costumes and that she just had to make her choice.

"Ok,"  she answered, "I want to be...a ladybug.  Can I have a cookie?

"I'm really interested in seeing if this Hallowe'en turns out problem-free.  Will it be a challenge or will she actually forego all the drama?

At least I can rely on her older sister to remain confident and content with her costume choice.  A few days ago my eldest child is caught snooping in my closet.  When I ask what she's doing, she replies, "Oh nothing. I didn't see any costumes either, but good job anyway, Mommy.  Do you know what I want to be for Hallowe'en next year?  Liana from Barbie and The Diamond Castle."

Sleep Solutions

By Ann Douglas

Sleep is the stuff of which dreams are made—especially if you’re a sleep-deprived mom. Here are some tips on troubleshooting some common mom, baby, and toddler sleep problems.

MOM

“My newborn is sleeping, but I’m not. It takes me forever to get back to sleep after each middle-of-the-night feeding—and then it’s time to start all over again!”

What to try:

Try to lull yourself back to sleep by breathing in and out slowly and deeply; imagining a peaceful and relaxing scene; and repeating the same relaxing word (“relax” or “calm”) over and over again until you fall asleep.

Get out of bed. If you aren’t asleep within 15 minutes (don’t look at the clock!), move to another room and read until you feel sleepy. Then go back to bed.

If you continue to have trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor. Caring for a new baby is tough enough without being chronically sleep deprived.

Thanksgiving Traditions: Nine Ideas for Families

Written By Susie Cortright

Celebrate families and togetherness this Thanksgiving Day with some time honored traditions, which give us a sense of family identity and meaningfulness that can last for generations.

Here are nine ideas for starting new family traditions, and for revering the old ones:

1. Sit down with your family and reminisce about your childhood celebrations. What do you remember most about Thanksgiving and the days that follow? Thanksgiving traditions can be much more than just food and recipes. In what ways did your childhood traditions symbolize particular values, such as abundance, generosity, the importance of family? What would you like to do that is the same? What would you do like to do differently?

2. Make a small booklet or a mini scrapbook album (which you can either make or purchase.) Write "Five Things I Love About My Family and Friends" and keep it out on the table during your Thanksgiving celebration. Each guest can come and record thoughts and insights. Other themes to try: "Five Things I am Thankful For" or "Five Wishes for my Family and Friends." An even simpler approach would be to put one sheet of cardstock out for each year, and combine them together over the years in a Thanksgiving Gratitude Scrapbook.

3. Keep a Family Gratitude Journal throughout the year. Each night, a family member can share something that they are grateful for. Share the highlights of this family tradition at the dinner table on Thanksgiving Day.

4. Make a Gratitude Circle. Before the Thanksgiving meal, everyone stands and holds hands in a circle. Guests each take a turn sharing what they are grateful for. Or, if your guests are on the shy side, ask everyone to write down their blessings on a piece of paper, which you can read before or after dinner.

5. Designate a particular tablecloth for your family Thanksgiving celebrations. Provide fabric markers where guests can record their "gratitudes" or special prayers for the year ahead. Ask your guests to sign and date each message, as you will be using the same tablecloth year after year.

6. Involve the entire family in Thanksgiving decorations. Family Fun magazine posts lots of creative ideas for the entire family at familyfun.go.com

7. Make a hostess gift for the person who is cooking this year. Purchase an apron or a T shirt or a gift album with sentiments of thanks from each guest. Present the gift after dinner.

8. Show your gratitude to an unsung hero. Get together with your family and decide on a person or a group in your community who could use an extra pat on the back, ie. firefighters, soldiers, police officers, volunteers. Put together a special plate of goodies and deliver it (or pack it up for shipping) as a family.

9. Preserve your traditions. After the meal, record the favorite activities of each family member. Appoint one person to be the scribe, or ask everyone to jot down a few thoughts. Remember to take lots of photos. It is fun to place disposable cameras throughout the house so everyone can capture bits of the action.

HALLOWEEN TIPS

Written by Carmen Joseph

Halloween is a fun time for our children to get dressed up and go out for “trick or treating”.  Unfortunately, there can be one too many bad apples that try to spoil this fun for our little ones.   As sad as this sounds, in the past food and candy has been tampered with intentionally for sick pranks. We as parents must take extra precautions to protect our little ones.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has a fact sheet out providing Halloween Safety tips.  Here is a summary of these tips and it is highly recommended to visit the website online to get a copy.

1.        Do not allow your children to snack on the candy before it has been inspected.

2.        Do not allow your children to eat anything that is not commercially wrapped.

3.        Inspect the treats and throw out anything that is baked,  homemade or has been tampered with.

4.        Throw out anything that can cause choking for young children.

5.        Inspect commercially wrapped treats for tampering, discolouration, tears & pinholes.

6.        Avoid mini cup jellies (with conjac, konuyaku, or glucomannan)  they pose a choking hazard.

7.        Make sure that juice or cider served at parties is pasteurized.

8.        Have your kids eat a good dinner before going out to avoid snacking.

Have a safe and Happy Halloween and don’t forget to remind your kids to brush their teeth well after eating their gooey treats. Sticky, sweet candy is not good for their teeth.
