Decisions

Written by Carmen Joseph

As I sit here trying to decide what my topic for this month’s newsletter should be, I’m reminded of a few of my daily tasks.  On a daily basis I am constantly asking myself these questions, “What should I make the kids for breakfast?”, “What are the girls going to wear today?” , “What am I going to make them for lunch?”, “What am I going to wear today?”  and “What am I going to make for dinner?”.

As a Mom, we have been given the role of being responsible for not only our well being but our families too.   There are days when I wake up and I just don’t feel like doing anything, but really is this possible?  Well in my world it is not, and I’m sure most of you Moms out there can relate.

How many of you Moms would love to be able to sleep in?  Isn’t that why we have weekends?  Weekends seem to be just as busy as weekdays and somehow kids all over the world are programmed to wake up early,  just  so that they can disturb your sleep.

What should I make for breakfast?  Breakfasts in our household are not that difficult and are usually based on what I have in my fridge or cupboards at the time.  I try to give my kids something nutritious and different on a daily basis.  On a good day they are happy with my choice, and on a not so good day they whine about what they want and what they can’t have because we ran out of it the day before.

Lunches are a hassle.  What do I make them for lunch?  I find it easier if you are making lunch for them to eat at home but when you are packing a lunch I find it a pain.  I usually end up sending the same things weekly  and usually it’s  a hit or miss whether they like it or not.  It’s  beyond me why on some days something you know they love,  they refuse to eat and other days they gobble it up not leaving a crumb.

I usually pick out the girls clothing and hope that it’s not one of those days when they want to wear a dress or are refusing to wear what I have chosen.   I’ve never been one to buy many dresses for my girls.  I always associated dresses as special occasion clothes and not everyday clothes.  Growing up tom boyish I was used to wearing a lot of pants and playing with cars, so I figured my girls would be like me.  Go figure,  my girls (especially the eldest) are girly and into princesses , Barbie dolls and of course pretty dresses that are usually dirty when they want to wear them.

Mornings are usually hectic as I try to get them out the door and on time for school.  So when it comes to finding something decent for me  to wear, I usually don’t put any time, thought or effort into it because I just don’t have the time.  My wardrobe of choice is, “Moms easy wear”.

Lately I’ve been very good with making dinner.  We use to order a lot of food as well as go out to restaurants which was quite costly.  I never have any idea what I am going to make, and take pride in throwing together something quick 20 minutes before my husband comes home.  However, I’m getting bored with the things that I make so  if any of you Moms care to share any of your good and easy recipes, it would  help ease this decision making Moms pain!    Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Does Make-believe make Kids Smarter?

By Tera Hryciuk

My girls and I love to make up stories together about magical creatures and faraway places. One day, Anastasia, my eldest, gingerly asked, "Mummy, do you think that any of it could be true?"

I reflected back on my own childhood and decided, then and there, to encourage them to believe in the unbelievable. "I think it really, truly could," I answered, before tucking her into bed and kissing her goodnight.

In my opinion, children grow up far too quickly, and this is why I have decided to encourage their belief in the fantastical for as long as they can. If one of the girls cries out as I'm brushing the knots out of her hair, I'll usually apologize and then add that the Knot Fairy had really had some fun the night before. When Natasha squeals with delight at the sight of a rainbow, I encourage her to look for gold.

Not only does our make believing make life fun, but it increases our ability to imagine and create stories, thus expanding our creative potential. In sum, daydreams and indulging in make-believe might actually make children smarter! As a would-be poet, I'll leave you with one of my magical poems that my daughters have inspired me to write:

It began while you were sleeping
Safely tucked inside your bed
They sprinkled you with magic
In a ring around your head
I spied them from the doorway
It was open just a crack
On my way back from the kitchen
Where I'd had a late night snack
What I saw was quite amazing
Some would say it wasn't so
A dozen little fairies played--
It made for quite a show.
 They kissed your little cheeks
And caressed your little chin
And although you didn't awaken
I thought I saw you grin
Then the moon began her yawning
And their fun came to an end
Each one blew you fairy kisses
As they pledged to come again.

The Seven Pillars of Self-Defense

By C.J. Doyle, Personal Safety Expert

The study of self-defense cannot be defined with quick, easy , and over simplistic solutions.  Acquiring a legitimate sense of control over your personal safety requires knowledge and skills in seven key areas.  Neglect any of them, and you do not have a complete and effective safety strategy.

Pillar#1 Survival Psychology

The need to feel safe and secure is ingrained in all of us. Many  psychologists consider the fear of interpersonal violence to be a “universal human phobia.”  The thought of becoming the victim of a criminal or violent act is disturbing.  Unmanaged fear or a sense of helplessness can erode our health and the quality of our lives.  Being safety conscious does not mean being fearful, paranoid, or afraid to leave your house.  Quite the contrary, self-defense knowledge and skills build a sense of control essential to a sense of security and well-being.

Survival psychology consists of three broad areas:

1.        Understanding and managing FEAR

2.        Motivating yourself to be “response-able”  for your personal safety through study and training, and…

3.        Understanding the impact SELF ESTEEM has on emotional resilience, crisis performance and victim selection.

Pillar#2 Survival Intelligence

Your most powerful weapon is your brain.  Understanding the dynamics of confrontations will have a big impact on your ability to recognize, avoid or respond effectively to violence.

Survival Intelligence is the cultivation of knowledge, intuition, awareness and assessment skills. Every violent situation is preceded by pre incident clues. Knowing how to recognize and respond to them is the essence of successful self-defense.

Pillar#3 Understanding Victim Selection

Psychologists showed a videotape to penitentiary inmates who were doing time for violent crimes.  The tape depicted several people going about their day-to-day activities.  The inmates were instructed to indicate which of the people on the tape they would select as victims.

The researchers were surprised at the consistency of the selections made.  An analysis of the results identified common traits unique to those who were selected and those who were passed over.  Not everyone will become the victim of a violent crime.  In fact, for everyone who is victimized, dozens more are evaluated and passed over.  By understanding first of all that there is a selection process, as well as the criteria of a “desirable target” , you can influence that process.

People who are trained in self-defense are seldom confronted.  Their awareness and skills (movement, posture, etc.)  project unconscious signals to a predator that they are not an easy target.  The predator looks elsewhere.

Pillar#4 Recognizing Predatory Behaviour

There are no unique physical characteristics that separate people who victimize others from those who don’t.  Usually, they look just like anyone else.  However, behaviour is another matter.  Most communication is non-verbal.  We transmit much of our intent in the way that we communicate and behave.  There are essentially two types of “bad guys” to be aware of.  The predator, who deliberately sets out to locate, select and attack a suitable victim and the ticking time bomb.  The latter is emotionally unstable and prone to violent outbursts.  Unlike the predator , who is more methodical in his approach, the time bomb will lash out at anyone who happens to get in his way.

By understanding predatory selection and attack methods, you are able to recognize and avoid them.  This involves learning to detect and recognize behaviour cues that identify a potential assailant before the selection process is complete.

LOONIE SAYINGS!

I am currently expecting my third child and here is my 2 and half year old and 4 and half year olds take on pregnancy.

*

My two and a half year old daughter while attending her preschool was listening to her teacher discuss Kangeroos.  During the discussion, nature had called so another teacher had accompanied her.

During this one on one time with the other teacher, my daughter says to the teacher, “Miss. E,  my mommy is like a Kangeroo.”  Miss E, responds “really, how is that”.  My daughter then tells her, “ My Mommy has a baby in her belly, but Miss. E  we cannot see it right now, but we  will see it soon! How are we going to see the baby Miss. E?”

*

My four and half year old tells me one day about my pregnancy, “ First the babu is a peanut, then it’s a watermelon, then it’s a bald baby with no hair, then it’s a baby with hair, and then it’s going to come out of your Bum Bum.”

Surprised by her explanation I asked, “ sweetie, who told you this?”  She says to me, “ You did Mommy, you read it to me in a book.”

Well the only time that I recall reading a book was when my I  was pregnant with my second child.  It was a Caillou book when his Mommy was pregnant with his little sister.  By no means did it explain it that way.
