MOMs Testimony sent by Monica of Mississauga.

Thanks for the info. on Dixie Apple Orchards - I took my son (5) and my father ( 79) last Saturday and it was wonderful. We'd never been there before and because of the rain earlier that day we had the place pretty much to ourselves. I look forward to your tips and suggestions in the future.

Regards Monica S.

Calling all parents with experience. We need your advice. Please help!

Since the holiday season is approaching us, and it happens to be gift giving season. How do we ensure that our children do not grow up with the feeling of entitlement?

This applies not only to Christmas, but to Birthdays as well.

Re: Parenting Tips.

FINDING THE CHILD WITHIN YOU

It’s funny how many of us adults, mainly the ones who do not participate in winter sports dread the winter season. In the eyes of a child, winter is magical. Do you remember when you were a child spending countless hours playing in the snow? Did you ever complain about how cold it was? I remember my fingers being frozen, my toes numb and still never wanting to go inside because I was having so much fun playing outside.

A trip to Alberta this past spring took me by surprise. In preparation for my trip I called my girlfriend who warned me that the weather was unpredictable as one minute it could be very warm and the next minute it could be snowing. I left for Calgary when all the snow had melted in Ontario and everyone was enjoying warm spring weather. Things were too good to be true, we lucked out the first few days of being there. Then of course our luck ran out as we found ourselves preparing for an impending snow storm.

The day it started to snow, I was supposed to drive to Edmonton for my return flight to Toronto. As I loaded the car, my almost 3 year old came out on the front lawn in wonderment. It was so amazing to see how excited she was that it was snowing. She ran around with her arms up in the air, sticking her tongue out so that she could catch the huge snowflakes. It’s moments like these that you can appreciate the beauty of the winter season. As winter approaches and you start to complain about the cold and the snow, try to find the child in you. Have Kids Will Travel

Thinking back to my Alberta trip, reminded me what it was like traveling alone with my kids. It's funny how when I was preparing for the trip, people would say "Are you crazy?". I always wondered why they would ask me the that, when traveling with my husband and kids, our experiences have always been fine.

Then I experienced traveling alone with a 3 year old and an almost one year old. I look back and laugh about it now. I just remember lugging all my stuf, my baby and my 3 year old crying ..."I WANT A COOKIE!" as we were almost late for boarding. Elizabeth Pantley offers some excellent tips on traveling with a baby which I've included in this issue, and you can find more tips online in our Parenting Tips and Featured Business section.

My husband and I have traveled a lot with our kids when they were babies and I have two valuable tips that will preserve your sanity and make it comfortable for you and baby. 1. To avoid your infant from experiencing ear pain (and possible damage) during take off and landing, nurse or have the baby drink from a bottle. (My kids never cried from the pressure). 2. This piece of advice is BIG, and it comes from an over packer...KEEP IT LIGHT!

Chores Build Character
By Christopher Doyle, Personal Safety Instructor

Give a child a job and watch their pride and confidence grow. Leave a child to be waited on hand and foot and watch his incompetence grow. We have a saying here at Credit Academy of Martial Arts, “ My mom is NOT my maid”. It’s critical to your child’s confidence that you let them feel the pride of some level of self sufficiency. Tying their shoes is a"Kodak" moment we all can remember, as well as riding their bike for the first time without training wheels. It’s all great success.

Now, imagine still tying your child’s shoes when they’re 12, or running along side their bike when they’re 12. It’s ridiculous in other less obvious areas as well, like clearing their plate after dinner, their bed in the morning, brushing their teeth, getting their jacket on, or picking up their toys! We should continue to expand their"jobs", preparing them for success at college, work and eventually marriage.
From laundry to bed making: Make it activities that are age appropriate and list them on a chart so the kids know what you expect. Follow-through, coach and encourage. You’ll be glad you did.

Can you imagine, which should be easy today, a teenager that can’t do their own laundry, cook a basic meal, clean up their room correctly or balance their cheque book?

You can teach your kids responsibility. You can do it. It just takes a little of what I call having a"Parental CIA" mentality. CIA stands for ConsistencyAction, by having patience, persistence and knowing that you are preparing your children to be good, honest, contributing in society.

Don’t steal from your kids…I can remember my first job. My first pay cheque. Can’t you? The pride and self sufficiency that comes from earning yourown way, becoming a responsible young adult. I teach the martial arts and the kids earn belt levels, I have seen a great explosion in kids’ confidence when they begin to do this.

Our martial arts belts system (the "chore chart") a great example of what I call small steps to success. We have 12 belts to earn before black belt and there are four tips (3 black and one red) that the student earns per belt level. When the student accomplishes their required skills they earn a tip on their belt. When all four tips are earned they qualify to test for the next belt level.

So don’t give your kids money for nothing, let them earn it, they will value it more and they will grow dramatically.
Need a chore sheet? Send me an email or call me and’ll be glad to get you one of theCredit Academy of Martial Arts family chore sheets.
Have a great month,
Christopher Doyle, 7th Dan Kyoshi

cjdoyle@pathcom.com
PS Also, when kids at the Academy earn their orange belt they qualify to be a member of the Junior Black Belt Club. Besides many increased benefits of training like enhanced focus, unstoppable confidence and better grades they become members of our leadership development team called S.T.O.R.M. club. S.T.O.R.M. stands for Special Team Of Role Models and the kids assist classes as "Belt Buddies" for the beginners. The teens love the program since they can use the assisting as volunteer hours!

Again, it is our way of helping the kids develop character with "chores" (being leaders and mentors to the younger kids) and it is great to see the happy faces when they have helped one of their belt buddies earn a stripe or new belt!

Airplane Travel with a Baby

By Elizabeth Pantley, author of Gentle Baby Care and The No-Cry Sleep Solution

Question
We’re about to take our first airplane trip with our one-year-old. We flew quite a bit before she was born, but now we’re not sure what to pack or how to make this trip successful.
Learn about it
Even if you racked up your share of frequent flyer miles before your baby was born, forget what you know of travel so far. Flying with a little one is a whole different story.

If you fear turning into one of those families we've all met aboard planes — those with squalling, unruly, squirming children who tend to bring out the same traits in their fellow passengers — take heart. My oldest child, Angela was just 14 days old when she took her first flight, and since then, I’ve taken many more trips with my four children. I know that you can travel with your little ones and enjoy the process.

Forethought and preparation are the keys.
