UV SAFETY

UV protection has been something that I’ve been aware of but haven’t always taken seriously.  Now that I have kids, it’s a different story.  Being a person of dark skin colour, I was always under the impression that I was covered.  The truth is people with darker skin have more melanin which is extra pigment that naturally absorbs UV rays, but they still require additional protection.  In fact, regardless of our skin colour we should all protect our skin from the suns damaging rays.

UV (ultraviolet) rays are the suns burning rays that can cause sunburn or skin cancer.  Ultraviolet rays (radiation) are invisible and can be classified in 3 types: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C.

The UV ABC’s

UV-A  -  Ages the skin and causes wrinkles

           -  Damages paints and outdoor plastics

UV-B  -  Causes skin cancer, cataracts, suntans & sunburns

           -  most harmful rays to humans, and wildlife

           - stronger then UV-A radiation

UV-C -  are filtered by the atmosphere and never reach

              the earth’s surface

            - stronger then UV-B radiation

How to Protect Yourself against UV radiation

You can protect you and your family against the harmful rays by following these guidelines.  Avoid direct and indirect sunlight, avoid being in the sun between 11 am and 4 pm, seek shade, wear clothing such as long sleeve shirts and long pants, wear a wide brim hat, apply lip balm with at least SPF 15 & sunscreen to exposed skin areas,  wear 100% UV protective sunglasses, and find out the daily local UV  Index (www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/canada_e.html).

SPF - Sun Protection Factor

SPF is the number that is labeled on the sunscreen. This number represents the amount of time that skin with sunscreen  protection can be exposed to the UV-B rays before the first signs of redness occurs, in comparison to skin that is unprotected

UV Index and what it means to you

The UV index measures the sun’s ultraviolet radiation intensity in relation to sunburn. The higher the index the more harmful it is to you. See UV index chart & recommended actions for each UV Index range on page 4.Check daily UV index forecasts to keep you & your family safe.

Personal And Family Safety Protection Tips

“RESTROOM SAFETY!”

With the kids  out of school and parents looking to take a little family vacation, one thing must always be addressed, and that is restroom safety. Restrooms in certain cases can be the haven for the wrong element and when opportunities knock, they will take advantage of the situation.

So to make things safer anytime a child—or an adult, for that matter--uses a room, such as a public or foreign restroom, that is isolated and closed off, there are a few precautions to always keep in mind.

If the child is old enough to use the restroom unaccompanied, have a check and balance system in place. Give the child a specific time limit, and wait directly outside the door. Children like to dawdle and they don’t have a very good sense of time, make sure your child understands that if he’s not out in a certain amount of time, you will come in and get him. My mother always said my brother Tim and I used to hurry because we were afraid she’d come in and embarrass us. In many cases the fear of an action is worse than the action itself.

If the child is small, pay careful attention to anyone leaving the restroom with a child or even a bundle wrapped in a coat or a blanket. Abductors are likely to pretend the child is sick or sleeping.

If you’re an adult going to the restroom either with a child or alone, remember that the busier it is the safer you will be. When someone is overpowered or mugged in a restroom it’s usually because he or she was alone with the Bad Guy. So, if you walk into an empty restroom, walk out and find another one that’s more populated.

Even for adults, it’s safer to go to the restroom in pairs, but if you’re with someone of the opposite sex, you can still establish a check and balance plan. Remember that the person you’re with can always yell or bang on the door without actually entering the restroom.

"SUMMER FUN"

Pick Your Own In Peel

Why not take a family outing to one of Peel Regions  farms and pick your own fruits and vegetables. There are  many farms in the peel region with a variety of fresh produce.  Some farms offer other activities for families such as a petting farm with young farm animals, hay rides, crafts and more.

Here are a list of fruits and vegetables available in August and ready for your picking:

 Vegetables

Beans, Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Celery,  Cucumbers, Eggplant, Herbs, Lettuce, Onions, Peppers, Potatoes, Pumpkins (later in the month), Radishes, Spinach, Summer Squash, Sweet Corn.

 Fruits

Apples, Asian Pear, Blackberries, Blueberries, Cantaloupes, Gooseberries, Peaches, Pears, Plums (later in the month), Saskatoon Berries.

I took a short drive up to Caledon and had a chance to visit a couple of farms.  I met Paul & Lynnette Gray of Dixie Orchards and their 2 young children.  Paul and his 4 year old were out picking Raspberries.  My visit there reminded me of the time when my husband, my 2 year old and I went raspberry picking a year ago.  My daughter loved the experience! While I was chatting with Paul she proceeded to beg me, saying “ Mommy, can we go berry picking? “Please, Mumma?”.

Visiting a local farm and picking your own fruits or vegetables, makes for a great family outing.  Not only is it a fun thing to do with the kids, it helps support  local farmers and it beats standing in the check out line at the grocery store.
