Finding Humour in Birthday Parties!
Written by Carmen Joseph

I’m trying to stay positive about birthday parties, especially having  had to plan and celebrate 3 which are so close to each other.

I’ve always been big on celebrations, up until recently.  In a span of 2 weekends I had 6 birthday parties to attend.  Yes, I know I had a choice and could have said no, however I do it for the kids.   Yes, it’s all about the kids.  Yes, the kids.

It’s great to see the kids running around having fun at these birthday parties.  All the parents thinking the same things, “it’s better here then at home” and “yes, that’s good go ahead and tire yourselves out”.

In theory it may seem like a great idea to have your kids get tuckered out at a birthday party and then when they get home they will be too tired to act up. Unfortunately for me this usually back fires.

There are a few things going against us.  First of all, do your kids really eat a good meal at a birthday party?  Not mine!  It’s bad enough that I have trouble feeding them on a regular basis but try getting your kid to eat at a birthday party, it just isn’t going down.

Second, The Cake.  Can you imagine the amount of sugar in that piece of cake that your kid is eating?  I would guesstimate that it would be more then enough sugar to fill a cavity.

Third, The Candy.  Now my kids love to go through the loot bags before leaving the party.  Luck has it there usually is something good and sweet in the bag.

So after the party is over and all the fun has ended, my kids get that last surge of energy from the sugar.  Yes they are wound up like the energizer bunny and there’s no stopping them now. “They keep going and going and going”!

It takes us a while to get them into the car and buckled into their seats.  Finally we get them strapped in and we start the car and are headed for home, they crash.   Yes the sugar rush has peaked and dropped, now they are down for the count.

The question is, do we wake them up when we get home or do we let them sleep? Either way we are doomed!  You wake them up they are going to be irritable and cranky.  You let them sleep and they will be up all night!

I’ve been humming and haaing about what to do for my kids birthdays. So, what am I going to do to celebrate?  Well you lucky parents guess what? It’s payback time!

How are you going to celebrate Canada’s Birthday?

HAPPY CANADA DAY!

10 Tips for Planning a Picnic
By Carmen Joseph

Organizing a picnic can be a lot of work, but if you are organized and well prepared it can make things much easier for you.

Here are a few tips to make your picnic go smoothly.

1.   Establish where you would like to have your picnic.  Mississauga has some wonderful parks that have designated picnic areas.  If you plan to have a large family picnic, getting a permit might be the way to go.  If you do not wish to pay for a permit or if it’s a small picnic, arriving early at the park will guarantee a good spot.

2.   If you don’t mind paying money for a park permit, call and reserve your spot early.  There are advantages to paying for a permit vs just showing up on the day of the picnic and hoping to find a great picnic area.  Some of these areas have shelter, running water, electricity and BBQ’s.

3.   Send your invitations out early. In the summer people often book their weekends quickly.  If you want a good turn out invite them a month before the picnic date.

4.   Decide who is responsible for the food. Have a potluck picnic where you ask everyone to bring something or have a catered BBQ and divide the costs per family.

5.   Decide what activities you will have at the picnic. You can find age appropriate picnic games on the internet. Bring a soccer ball, put up a volleyball or badminton net. Try to get everyone involved.

6.  Create a check list.  Run through your check list the night before to ensure that you have everything that you need.

7.   Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Get as much help as possible.

8.  Arrive early to set up.   If the weather is going to be nice, it’s wise to arriving early.  The parks fill up really quickly and everyone will be competing for the best picnic spot. If you have a permit it is also wise to get there early to avoid someone else setting up their picnic in your area.

9.   Enjoy the day. Take some time to enjoy yourself the day of the picnic.

10. Clean up. Don’t forget to ask for clean up help.

Below you will find a list of the picnic parks in Mississauga. Group picnics with more than 25 people require a permit in order to reserve an area on a per day basis. For more information or to reserve a picnic area you can contact Customer Service at (905) 615-4100.

Cross the Street Safely

Written By Christopher Doyle, Personal Safety Expert

When I was a young boy I witnessed a very dramatic thing. A neighbourhood kid was playing in an alleyway and went running into the street just as a dump truck was driving by. As I looked into his eyes I was saddened at the look in his eyes. That was one of the most impacting things in my life and I am sure it is part of what made me who I am today, a martial arts educator and a personal and child safety instructor.

What I want to discuss this month is how children should cross a street safely. Children need instruction on how to cross the street safely under several conditions such as at a location where there are stop signs, at a location with traffic signals, at a location with a school crossing guard, and at any location with moving traffic.

According to studies, children have a difficult time judging time and distance relationships. Plus, there are at least 26 other decisions to be made each time you cross a street. That does not count the decisions needed when you add a bike being rolled across, or a toy being carried across. But it is easy to see why repeated training in how to cross a street safely is an important part of childhood education.

The most popular rule of thumb is that no child under 7 should cross a street alone. And many professionals have bumped that up to children 10 and under. But the truth is that there is no magic age of safety. Untrained kids forget to look, and they forget that the rules include any place there is a chance of pedestrian collision with moving vehicles. Constant reminders are examples of smart parenting.

There was a close call just the other day at our local gas station. Two kids (ages 12 and 10) were handed a dollar each by their father to spend inside the gas station store. Without looking, they tore across the gas station lot to get inside. Six cars were able to stop without hitting them, but it was a near thing. Neither the children nor their father noticed the quick reflexes of the people around them. It's not that the kids should have know better, which is of course true. It's that their parent should have known better. Whether your kids are crossing a street, a gas station, an amusement park lot, or any place cars are coming and going - remind your children of the four basic rules.

Four Basic Rules:  Crossing the Street Safely Rules

1.     Cross at the corner or don’t cross at all! - Find a safe place to cross like the traffic lights or a street corner.

2.     Stop and Look, Stop and Look, both ways. Do you see traffic? How about a parked car - is someone in it, ready to pull out? What do you see?

3.     Are cars, trucks and busses coming? Wait and let them pass.

4.     When it is safe, walk straight across and keep looking around. You never know when a car might suddenly pull away from the curb, back out from a parking place or a driveway, or appear suddenly from around a corner.

I hope that these four basic rules are easy enough to review with your child when they are ready to cross a road by themselves.

Stay safe!

MY SUPPER WORKSTM EXPERIENCE
Written By Carmen Joseph

I’m sure you Moms have heard about Supper WorksTM and if you haven’t, you can find out more as I tell you about my experience.

One of the Moms I know mentioned a place, where for a reasonable fee, you can go and prepare your meals and not have to worry about buying ingredients or cleaning up. I thought to myself, “ How great is that! ”

Here’s the scoop, I don’t mind cooking. However, what I mind is having to think about what I’m going to cook on a daily basis. I’m not one to plan out my meals for the week, nor do I enjoy the chore of going to the grocery store. I’m also not the type to try out a recipe from a cookbook or magazine.

So when one of the Moms organized a group night at Supper WorksTM in Lorne Park, I decided to give it a try. I went online and signed up for the evening of choice. Once I chose the session, I was given the menu selections for that day. I had several meals to choose from, and the option to split the meals in half so that I could get two meals out of one recipe.

Once I was booked I didn’t have to do anything else but show up to prepare my meals. All the shopping, washing, cutting, slicing and grating they did.

When we arrived for our party we were offered a drink and then it was explained how Supper WorksTM works. There were stations set up with the recipes and all of the ingredients and utensils required for you to prepare your meal. Once you prepare the meal, they are there to clean up after you so that you can move on to the next station.

I was quite impressed with the place, it was clean, efficiently run and the staff were friendly and very helpful. The ingredients were fresh, nutritious and the recipes were easy to follow. We had a really fun night and the bonus was I got to go home with 12 gourmet entrees to put in my freezer for future dinners.

The evening after my Supper WorksTM experience, my husband came home and asked what was for supper. I didn’t have to think too long about what to cook. I pulled one of the prepared meals out of the freezer, thawed it and cooked in no time at all.

So when asked, “Would you go again?” my reply to that question is, “Sign me up”!
